SHOSHONE FALLS

MARCH 2017

SHOSHONE FALLS

SHOSHONE FALLS

SNAKE RIVER

Shoshone Falls is a popular waterfall located along the Snake River just outside of Twin Falls. The impressiveness of the falls will depend on the time of year you visit. The water flow will be highest from around March to May, and can get really low during the summer when much of the water is diverted for irrigation. A $3 fee is charged from March to September to enter Shoshone Falls. From the parking area, there are several short paths which will take you to different views of the falls. When we visited in March of 2017, the falls were running extremely high. As such it was very crowded. It was also a very windy day, and I remember not being able to see the bottom half of the falls due to all the mist.

While impressive, it is a very industrialized natural attraction. Idaho Power has constructed facilities all throughout the falls and there is a residential subdivision located just a couple hundred feet away to the north. And, as mentioned above, the falls slow to a trickle during the summer when much of the Snake River above the falls is diverted for irrigation. When you visit, you are left wondering how cool it could have been if the area around it had been protected earlier. Though, with that said, it still makes for a nice stop if you are driving along the I-84 in the Spring. Especially if you have kids with you, as it only requires a very short walk to see.
